For Fall/Winter 2017, Victoria Beckham has fully departed from her previous body-conscious silhouette to embrace a wide range of oversized suiting and knits.
If Victoria Beckham returns for the rumored Spice Girls reunion (though she seems to have completely divorced herself from her pre-Becks identity) she’ll have to forego the moniker “Posh” for the now more accurate “Preppy”. The British designer has radically changed her public style – once a bastion of clinging sheaths and high-heeled pumps – in favor of pieces that are, in her words, more “real”, and since her eponymous label is rooted in Beckham’s personal looks, it logically follows that her collections have followed suit. She makes no secret of her new preference for comfort, emerging at the end of her continually well-received fashion shows in oversized jumpers and sneakers. For Fall/Winter 2017, however, she’s gone full prep school, but her new aesthetic is not without hints of sensuality.
If there was any doubt that the queen of body-conscious silhouettes has softened her stance on fit, look no further than the baggy trousers and oversized suits that swept down her runway. Everything was sized to envelope and obscure the figure, a motif which extended to accessories like elbow-length gloves and ankle boots which were long, leather, and scrunched. Buttoned-up shirting was layered with wooly coats, giant blazers and cardigans and paired with long sheer skirts and masculine trousers. Cozy knits also spoke to the theme of comfortability, but when they weren’t over-large and baggy they were sinewy and fitted – some of the few pieces that hinted to a female figure beneath.

Furthermore, Beckham has a firm grasp on emerging trends like over-long sleeves and knotted details across the waist, which boosted the high-fashion credentials of the collection. Insiders have frequently reported that the designer is sharply in tune with her clients, and that she listens to their feedback and incorporates it into her future designs. If the fully-covered and roomy fits of the Victoria Beckham Fall/Winter 2017 collection are any indicator, women are demanding clothes that cushion them from the demanding gaze of outsiders.
