Her Instagram following is 3.7 million strong and growing, she has graced magazine covers in her native Netherlands and beyond, and she’s the founder of a mega-popular beauty product that is coveted worldwide. It’s safe to say that Persian-Dutch influencer Negin Mirsalehi is having a major moment.
And if all of the above wasn’t enough, she is now sinking her teeth into designing – sunglasses, to be specific. For its new collection, leading eyewear brand Linda Farrow tapped four top influencers to be the faces of the season’s key pieces. Besides regional favorite Mirsalehi, Elena Perminova, Leaf Greener, and Nicole Warne are also on the roster.
The new, nature-inspired collection for Spring/Summer 2017 seamlessly fuses different materials such as wood, marble, jade, and gold, thereby creating strong contrasts within the silhouettes that were inspired by the 70s.
Below, Mirsalehi opens up exclusively to Savoir Flair about beauty, family, future ventures, her mother’s most important advice, and more.
How did you become involved with Linda Farrow?
I’ve long been an avid fan of Linda Farrow, plus I always wear the brand’s sunglasses, so it was a really natural process to collaborate. Linda Farrow’s collections and collaborations are always so unique and special.
What eventually made me turn my passion into a business was a speech given by Steve Jobs.
Tell us about the frames you designed.
The frames I designed are very much vintage inspired, which is a trend you see a lot nowadays, from fashion to interior design and art. The transparent lenses and the model of the frame fall into that trend.
What made you decide to set up your personal style platform?
What eventually made me turn my passion into a business was a speech given by Steve Jobs. Basically, he pointed out that you have nothing to lose, so why not follow your dreams? His speech made me decide to just follow my passion and set up my personal style platform.
Your website takes you on the road, where you chronicle your travels. Do you tailor your fashion and beauty to the town or city that you’re in?
I think it’s fun to get inspired by different places and let the town or city you are in influence your style choices. I immediately notice that, when I’m in Paris, I dress more Parisian-chic. Traveling pushes me to adapt my style to new locations and experiment a bit more, which is always a joy!
What destination has generated the most interest?
I received loads of positive responses to my recent trip to Peru, especially my visit to Machu Picchu. It was such a unique and magical experience, so I’m really happy that I could share it with my followers.
What is your favorite place in the world?
Currently, my favorite place is Amsterdam. It never gets old and it has just the right amount of hectic city life. It’s not as hectic as New York at all, but it still gives off the same sort of energetic vibe that’s unique to Amsterdam.
What is your favorite mode of transport?
I love to walk because it’s the best way to explore. I also enjoy hiking because you can easily bump into hidden gems in contrast to other modes of transport.
Is there something you will not travel without?
Definitely a pair of sunglasses for several reasons: it’s my favorite accessory, it covers up the dark circles under your eyes when you travel a lot, and you never know… you might end up in a sunny city or somewhere with great tropical weather.
Do you have a favourite social-media outlet?
Instagram is still my number one. It’s the perfect social-media platform for modern society and culture. You can easily check your feed or publish a post when you’re in a rush or on the go.
What is it that you enjoy most about working with brands?
What I enjoy most is when there’s creative freedom and we can put our minds together and come up with something super fun, inspired, and unique.
Negin means “gemstone” in Farsi. Do you have a favourite gem?
Indian sapphire is my favourite.
Can you describe what you are wearing today?
I’m wearing a pair of vintage Levi’s jeans, boots, a Saint Laurent belt, and a burgundy-colored turtleneck.
Do you go off things easily?
It depends. Some things, yes – but when there are staple pieces involved, I will never get tired of them.
What is your favorite thing currently?
Decorating my new apartment in Amsterdam.
Healthy hair is beautiful hair.
You have worked with many beauty brands. What is the most valuable piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?
It was actually from my mom, who taught me a lot about hair. She said not to experiment too much and really take care of my hair. She always told me that healthy hair is beautiful hair.
Your hair receives a lot of attention. What is the secret to shiny, healthy locks?
My Gisou ‘Honey Infused Hair Oil’ really makes sure that my hair stays healthy, even though I travel a lot and use a lot of styling tools.
Can you pinpoint your first fashion moment?
Walking the runway at home in front of my mom and her friends.
Do you come from a fashionable family?
Definitely. My mom always handmade clothes for me and my sisters using delicate materials. I remember her making a beautiful wrap skirt with braided red flowers for me, which I adored. I always used to wear it.
How would you describe your look? Has anyone ever summed up your personal style perfectly?
Relaxed, feminine, vintage, and cool – that’s what a lot of people say, so we’re definitely on the same page.
You receive a lot of support from your followers. What has been the most rewarding piece of feedback that you’ve received?
Recently, I started uploading vlogs on YouTube, and I really try to do it differently and in my own way. I really appreciate it when people notice this and tell me so. That kind of recognition makes me truly happy.
Do you have a career highlight to date?
Launching my own hairline, Gisou. It was always a dream of mine, and the feedback has been tremendous. I’m really grateful.
What is next for Negin Mirsalehi?
The next thing is to focus on bringing Gisou to the next level, doing projects with brands that I’m really passionate about, and enjoying every moment of this crazy, beautiful journey.
