This graceful and shimmering couture collection was no mirage.

Two inspirations from the land of his birth have continually informed Elie Saab’s ethereal designs: the golden light of Lebanon and the golden age of Beirut in the 1970s (when it was known as the “Paris of the Middle East”). Although Saab departed from these key inspiration points last couture season in order to pay homage to another destination he loves – New York City – he has returned in full force for Spring 2017 Couture to celebrate ‘The Birth of Light’ as the collection is so aptly named. This ethereal, shimmering collection contains all of the grandeur of a traditional haute couture display: red carpet savoir-fare, feminine silhouettes, and glamorous accents. It will come as little surprise to you later on to see many of these looks end up on A-list celebrities during award season, as that is their intended goal.

Saab’s Spring 2017 Couture spins magic from the pixie dust of filigreed thread, crystal beading, and featherweight fabrics, underscoring his love of the MENA region with embroidered renderings of boats in the Nile, Egyptian eyes, and other culturally significant images. Embellishments in sapphire and crystal floated across nude chiffon and mousseline gowns, while silk frocks in serene navy hues were glammed up with harness-like belts that wound around the neck and waist.

It will come as little surprise to you later on to see many of these looks end up on A-list celebrities during award season, as that is their intended goal.

Like several others designers this season, Saab saw fit to include a round of feathered accents found on powder blues and gold gowns that sprouted marabou clusters from the waist and shoulders, respectively. It is hard to believe that a designer could so eloquently express an ode to the Arab woman, Arab cinema, and the birth of light in sartorial form, but Elie Saab is not any designer and this graceful and shimmering couture collection was no mirage.
