It was a welcome reprieve to see some new ideas on the Ralph & Russo runway.

Red-carpet couture house Ralph & Russo departed from traditionalism for Spring 2017 Couture and set out on a more daring adventure than we’ve seen from it in previous seasons. While its deeply beautiful and lavishly embellished gowns are nothing short of breathtaking, it was a welcome reprieve to also see some new ideas on the brand’s runway. This was achieved with the help of sleek, uniform pageboy hairstyles – like the kind worn by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction – which gave even the most over-the-top gown a hip edge. A sportswear-adjacent vibe also provided cues that Ralph & Russo was on to something new.

With a palette spectrum ranging from flaming reds to cool ice blues, this collection expertly alternated between fire and frost. Intermingled with slinky, jaw-dropping dresses and bewitching Old Hollywood-style gowns were exquisite skirt-suit separates, sporty mini dresses with glittering chainmail sleeves, and one-shoulder Grecian goddess looks. Every corner that Ralph & Russo turned held a surprise, be it a pale-blue gown made from 3D hexagon appliqués, a jade-green dress that wrapped the throat and knotted at the torso, or a frothy lavender tulle frock.

It goes without saying that the handiwork displayed on Ralph & Russo’s runway underscores its relevance on the couture calendar. All in all, this collection was sharp, smart, and unbelievably gorgeous, offering much, much more than typical red-carpet fare.
