Jewelry designer Donna Hourani is kind of a superhero – a superhero mom, that is. With two young kids and a household to run, the mother and wife is not only the designer behind her eponymous label, but she also runs the business herself. With exciting new plans for her brand in the pipeline, Donna Hourani has a lot going on, but she manages to make it all seem easy as pie. Read on for exclusive insight into a typical day in the up-and-coming jewelry designer’s life.
I wake up at 7:30 a.m. with Sam (aged four), Sary (aged two), and my husband. We are all up around the same time in the house. I get myself ready while the kids are having breakfast, and then we’re off to the nursery by 8 a.m. The playlist every morning is the same CD of French nursery rhymes. My kids sing along, which makes it easier for me to listen to and tolerate the songs every morning! I love spending this time with them in the car.
I’m ready to start my day at work by 9 a.m. I usually begin by updating and checking sales on my online store and going through my e-mails with a side of breakfast. I don’t have an office yet, so I’ve been working from home and coffee shops since I started the business. My routine has been all over the place, especially with two kids in the picture, but I’ve been managing quite well, thankfully.
Today is the start of a new phase in my career. I visited my future office to plan the layout and brainstorm interior-design ideas for the space. I’m very excited for it to come together in the next month or two.
It’s time to pick up the kids. I let them play at the nursery playground for a while and then we head home. The two-year-old instantly falls asleep in the car every single time. On most days, I get all my errands and work done in the morning and spend the rest of the day with my kids.
I missed workshop time today, so I had to drop them home and pass by the workshop in the afternoon. I spend an average of two hours a day there, three to four days a week, depending on how many new designs are in progress. Along with the new office, I’m starting my new collection at the moment. I can’t reveal the sketches just yet, but some of our bestsellers – like the ‘Dew on Tendril’ earrings – will continue into the next collection.
In the afternoon, we usually head down to JBR beach now that the weather is beautiful in Dubai. We walk around, they ride their scooters, and they just get excited about everything they see. By 7:30, my husband is home and I’ve showered and fed the kids. We all hang out together on the couch – this is probably the best time of the day for me.
The kids are in bed around 8 p.m. My husband and I have a light dinner together, usually labneh with brown toast, some cheese, olives, tomatoes, and cinnamon tea. We catch up on our day, and then I’m back on my dining table sketching designs for the new collection. My husband practises his classical guitar in the background, which he does every night. How’s that for live entertainment?
On a normal night, I would sleep around 10:30. Tonight, I stayed up sketching until 12:30. You can’t stop yourself when the ideas are flowing. I can’t wait to show you the finished pieces!
A month-long Donna Hourani pop-up will be held at Etoile La Boutique in Mall of the Emirates from Thursday, January 19th.
