Designer Ayah Tabari of Mochi is known for her dedication to supporting stitching communities across the world. For her eighth ready-to-wear embroidery collection, she headed to Morocco, working closely with local artisans to bring her vision to life. What resulted is a beautiful union of Berber tapestry with contemporary designs and silhouettes.
“Spending time with the artisans definitely inspired me to make sure that I raise awareness of their incredible creative talent. The more people support Mochi, the more I can provide for the communities and not only change their lives in the short term, but also provide them with long-term jobs and monetary benefits. I hope I do their beautiful country justice,” she says of the experience. Scroll through as Tabari takes you to the vibrant, colorful markets and dusty-pink streets of Morocco in this travel diary, shared exclusively with Savoir Flair.

“On day one, I checked into the El Fenn hotel in Marrakesh to start my journey of creating the ‘Morocco’ collection. I was so excited to get started that I literally dumped my bags and headed straight out to start exploring the city.”

“My first stop was at the Medina, where I starting looking for fabrics to make up the foundation of the collection. We searched for hours, and I was in my element. I’ve never seen such beautiful craftsmanship in one place, and trying to choose the fabrics was proving a bit of a nightmare – I wanted to use everything! We finished the search by sitting with the artisans who create the weave embroidery.”

“I started day two on a hunt for these crazy bread baskets that I’d seen at dinner the night before. After choosing the colors that I felt most suited the collection and organizing 100 baskets to be shipped to our HQ, the hunt for fabric continued.”

“We then visited the Bahia Palace; its ceilings and tiles were very captivating, and the hidden courtyard surrounded with greenery was so endearing. I pictured my Mochi ‘Muse’ from our new collection sitting here, and it got me so excited. I went to bed early again as we wanted to wake up at El Fenn for sunrise.”

“Day four, the last day in Morocco. We woke up and had breakfast quickly as we had to rush to the airport. I was quite sad as I didn’t want to leave. Morocco gave me endearing new relationships, a spiritual journey, and a deeper insight into the art of traditional Moroccan embroidery – and I really hope it all reflects in this collection!”
