Following Orkalia’s Spring/Summer 2017 presentation at Fashion Forward Dubai yesterday, the brand released an exclusive preview of the lookbook for Savoir Flair readers. Where previous seasons have seen a focus on daywear and eveningwear, recent efforts by designer Orchid Ganji feature a selection of outerwear as well. For SS17, Orkalia includes lightweight trench coats and stylish bomber jackets to complement a range of drawstring culottes, embroidered tap shorts, button-back blouses, and drop-waist dresses.
Like all her previous work, Ganji highlights a philosophical component in her collection, with Spring/Summer 2017 focused on embracing one’s “inner child” and balancing that instinctual way of being with one’s place as a member of society. With that in mind, she contrasted “uniform” elements like cummerbunds and mandarin collars with softer accents, such as floral embroidery. The new collection’s theme is centered on having a “tough exterior [but a] soft core”, placing the unique juxtapositions of fabric, embroidery details, and colors in sharp relief.
In an exclusive conversation with Savoir Flair, Ganji revealed the inspiration behind the lookbook, saying, “For the lookbook, we deliberately wanted to stay away from a clean and clear backdrop. We ended up using wire meshing, harmonious to the mesh guipure used in the pieces, to portray a sense of fencing or barrier. Nevertheless, using the rolls of forest-green wire meshing in vertical placements also reminds of the placement of trees in forests. This way, we created depth against the pieces in a way that unconsciously speaks of the message of the collection, making the audience feel emotions when viewing the looks, rather than just seeing clothes. As with most Orkalia collections, the pieces are an extension of the message they aim to bear, so storytelling becomes an important element, whether it is with the lookbook or through the more full-fledged presentations.”
