Although Elie Saab’s past few collections have proved the designer is widening his vocabulary to include clothes beyond the red-carpet signatures we’ve come to expect from him, the real headline from his star-studded, disco-themed Spring/Summer 2017 presentation was the surprising inclusion of athletic styles. Elie Saab does athleisure? Who would’ve thought? His streamlined tracksuits and shorts might have only made a brief appearance on the runway, but the fact that they were there at all speaks to the designer’s recent evolution.
There were stars on the clothes and stars on the runway as top models like Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and newcomer Hailey Baldwin stalked the catwalk.
There were stars on the clothes and stars on the runway as top models like Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and newcomer Hailey Baldwin stalked the catwalk in molten-gold suits, multi-colored disco gowns, and elaborately embellished and fringed mini dresses. Some of his three-piece suits featured glittering sequin exteriors, while other looks were more fluid and breezy, featuring billowing robe toppers and sheer, embroidered overlays. Grommeted jumpsuits and track jackets also made an appearance, alongside track pants and joggers, making a stylish, upmarket case for athleisure in a party setting. Saab knows how to entice drama from his designs, so he surprised us again by showing two silk jackets with voluminous leg-o-mutton sleeves – a stylistic departure from his 1970s-themed collection.
Ahead of the show, Saab released his digital mood board on Instagram, which featured a flip book of disco images from the 1970s and shots of celebrities milling around Studio 54 – leaving little doubt as to the theme. Additionally, the Saab team branded the collection with the hashtag #StandingonStardust and put the question “Would you rather be a disco ball or a dance floor?” to celebrities like Baldwin and Hadid on Snapchat. All of this added up to a very light-hearted, fun, and youthful collection that was also seriously fashionable by any standards.
