Seemingly breaking all the rules of fashion with one fun and excess-driven collection, Dsquared2 Spring/Summer 2017 is not for the faint of heart.

Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2 have always approached fashion with an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mentality. Some of it hits, some of it misses. While we’ve come to expect their fun-loving, maximalist aesthetic at Milan Fashion Week, something wasn’t quite connecting in terms of their Spring/Summer 2017 presentation. While amplified sleeves have been a major trend for the season so far, the Caten brothers’ version rested on pointed and exaggerated leg-of-mutton sleeves, puffed up in an array of taffeta fabrics and done in mink, leopard print, plaid, or jewel tones.

These major sleeves were then paired with leotards, lavishly embroidered and embellished mini dresses, or street-style trousers. Such top-heavy proportions are more suggestive of a 1980s silhouette, as opposed to the 1890s that informed the look. It felt a bit gaudy but, admittedly, there were some cool ideas in the mix. Notably, Dsquared2’s trompe-l’œil details, which featured sequins that mimicked the look of bleach-stained denim, worked well on the brand’s low-slung trousers. Accessories were strong – especially the evil eye-embellished footwear and oversized-ribbon earrings – but when added onto ensembles that were already voluminous and extravagantly detailed, the results felt excessive to say the least.
