Giambattista Valli’s younger sister line, Giamba, has attitude – the kind that causes insiders to refer to her cheekily as a “Valli Girl”. Privileged, hip, young, and beautiful, Giamba spends her time at Burning Man and Coachella before making her way back to the family estate in Italy. For Spring/Summer 2017, Valli sent a wilder version of his Giamba girl down the runway, referencing Alice in Wonderland along the way. With cult-like emblems on her forehead, she was outfitted in miniskirts, mini dresses, and sheer frocks whose provocative sensibilities ran in direct contrast to the ladylike materials and details they were constructed with. With desert-printed athleisure-wear in the mix, there was little doubt as to the age group he was courting with this collection.
What might have been a modest look launched the show, but Valli took the lacy, buttoned-up milieu and sliced it in half, showing off taut tummy and gamine legs in an eyelet two-piece. Through sheer dresses printed with cartoon leopards and sheer slips, Valli left underwear visible, and kept hemlines abbreviated throughout the majority of the presentation. While these miniature silhouettes were ruffled, appliquéd, and fringed in feminine fashion, they left little to the imagination.
For the insouciant girl who dares to wear demi couture to an outdoor music festival, Giamba is stocked with gorgeous pieces that put a wayward spin on innocence.
Some of the more covered-up separates showed a collage of mixed prints and desert scenery, as well a cartoon animals and mushrooms – the latter a nod to Alice’s experiences down the rabbit hole. Additionally, Valli enticed Insta-stars on his front row with diaphanous bohemian gowns, flirty babydoll dresses, sequined playsuits, and gorgeous flared trousers featuring floral prints. Contemporary Westernwear evoked a Los Angeles mood, especially in the case of sheer dresses with elaborately fringed overlays.
