If you indulge in a double – or triple – take when viewing the Moschino runway, we wouldn’t blame you.

Have you ever seen the lazy man’s tuxedo? It’s a tuxedo printed onto a t-shirt which originated in the 1970s, and is still worn often enough by Halloween party goers as a last-minute costume to still be found in closets today. Moschino pushed this trompe l’oeil concept into overdrive for Spring/Summer 2017 with a collection that played visual tricks on nearly every surface. Tweeds, chains, pearls, bikinis, denim shorts, and fishnets were revealed to be nothing more than clever prints, but the idea really solidified on a variety of dresses that came replete with a fake doll’s arm jauntily attached to the hip. If you indulge in a double – or triple – take when viewing the Moschino runway, we wouldn’t blame you.

Designer Jeremy Scott loves to toy with expectations, and the Moschino dolls he sent out at Milan Fashion Week this season are among his most successful ideas in recent memory. It certainly made for a playful collection, as feminine daywear accented with polka dots, chains, and pearls (some real, some not), came with tabbed wings like the kind you would find in a book of paper doll cut-outs.

It was all rather hilarious and tongue-in-cheek, but may turn out to be rather less convincing for those in search of real clothes to wear to real events.

Since dolls were the theme, the trompe l’oeil silhouettes and surfaces were rather glamorous, with cocktail dresses, one-shoulder gowns, and ladylike separates storming the catwalk like an army of Barbies come to life. Moschino also has a streetwear agenda, and Scott included hoodies, joggers, pill-printed sweater-dresses, and other wearable goodies in his glam-doll line-up. It was all rather hilarious and tongue-in-cheek, but may turn out to be rather less convincing for those in search of real clothes to wear to real events.
