We’ve all been there – butterflies in the stomach, a rapidly beating heart, and that slightly giddy feeling you get because you’re convinced you’ve met “The One”. This type of love doesn’t only happen between two humans; it’s also been known to happen between a fashion girl and a gorgeous piece of clothing or accessory. And with a beloved cult brand such as Céline in the picture, it’s hardly difficult to grasp the development of a deep and enduring love affair.
Savoir Flair spoke to four regional style influencers about their Céline-related love stories. From the meet cute to “the one that got away”, scroll through to read anecdotes from die-hard Céline fashionados Dana Hourani, Alamira Noor Bani Hashim, Lilian Afshar, and Haif Abdalla.
Dana Hourani, Musician
“What I love most about Céline is the ability that it gives me to express my love for menswear through women’s designs. The idea of being comfortable while remaining fashionable and sophisticated is like no other.
The first item that made me fall in love with the brand is the black-and-white ‘Luggage’ handbag, which was so difficult to find at the time. I was never able to get it. There were also these white slingback boots with a sculptural metal heel from SS16 that got away. I tried to locate them in several cities through friends living abroad but, unfortunately, they sold out so quickly.”
Alamira Noor Bani Hashim, Co-Founder of The Dinner Club No.57
“My love affair with Céline started with the Daria Werbowy ads and ‘Luggage’ totes. I love everything about this brand, from the collection to the store interiors and Phoebe Philo herself. The aesthetic is minimal but intentional.
There was a cream T-shirt dress, which I spotted in London, that was so versatile and fit me like a glove. I really regret not buying it. The turtleneck with the exaggerated bell sleeves also got away.”
Lilian Afshar, Accessories Designer
“For me, Céline’s campaigns are always the ones I look forward to most every season. I mean, when you get Juergen Teller to photograph Daria Werbowy dressed in Céline, you can’t go wrong.
I’m always lusting over anything and everything Céline. I love the minimal, organic, and effortlessly chic feel that is evident in every single collection. Right now, it would be the ruched ivory-silk ensemble from the FW16 runway show. I also still think about the silk shirt that Kanye wore circa Coachella 2011.”
Haif Abdalla, Strategy Manager
“As cliché as it might sound, it started in Paris during the summer of 2012, when I got my first ‘Nano Luggage’. My collection very quickly grew shortly after that. My most memorable moment with Céline was being invited to the SS16 show in Paris. I love this brand in its entirety because of its simplicity and practicality. It has redefined the concept of femininity in my closet, and I love it!
I was lusting over the ‘Twisted Cabas’ until my last trip to NYC, when I eventually caved and had to bring one home. The furry slippers from SS13 are the ones that got away… I don’t even want to talk about it.”
