For Spring/Summer 2017, Stacey Bendet’s collection was said to be inspired by the romantic mystic gardens of Bomarzo in Rome where, according to the show notes, “the power of interpretation wanders free”. Eighteenth century tarot cards with elements of the sun, moon, earth, air, and fire were scattered like potpourri across the showroom floor and models struck poses under floral arches draped in ruby roses.
Channeling the dynamic nature of the Alice + Olivia woman, this collection aimed to balance Bendet’s love of vintage Italian romance with an admirable dose of independence. Sartorially, ethereal silhouettes in tones of pink, poppy, green, indigo, and violet called to mind this figurative woman’s softer qualities, while graphic stripes and 80s-inspired studs and embellishments demanded she channel her inner rock ‘n’ roll urges.
The aforementioned contrast played out particularly well in layered looks, whether it was a white lace gown paired with a crystal-studded cropped denim jacket and suede booties or a studded leather jacket hung over an embroidered spaghetti-strap dress. It was during moments like these that the tough elegance that Bendet’s fierce Italian fairytale aimed to conjure up really sparkled.
The show also marked the launch of a number of “see now, buy now” pieces. The special capsule collection, which includes leather jackets with the messages “#LoveYourself” and “Always Right”, is available for immediate purchase on aliceandolivia.com and the brand’s boutiques worldwide. In the words of Bendet, “a strong woman not only has the beauty of interpreting life’s messages but seeks instant gratification when defining her vision.”
