This cross-cultural duo (Radhika is from San Francisco while her sister-in-law Gauri is from Bombay) are the brilliant designers behind the jewelry line Isharya.
Their vision melds the best of styles from the East and West with lightweight, ethereal pieces that float along nearly invisible connecting lines. Isharya centers around rough-hewn, organic pieces, large stones in a brilliant array of colors, and natural-looking settings. Radhika and Gauri lend us a moment of their time to share their inspirations, style aesthetic, and details on their Middle East expansion.
WHAT DEFINES THE ISHARYA AESTHETIC?
We make wearable statement pieces which effortlessly fuse California chic with Bollywood glamour. We use resin, wood, semi precious, and glass stones in our collections.
HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR PIECES TO BE WORN?
Isharya pieces are statement pieces that can be worn simply on their own or in combination. Our favourite combinations involve a bib necklace or chandelier earrings with a chunky cocktail ring or wide cuff.
HOW HAS YOUR INDIAN HERITAGE INFLUENCED YOUR WORK?
We are inspired by the jewelry of Indian royalty and implement the techniques in new and interesting ways. Every season, we use mirror glass in some pieces to mimic Indian polki, otherwise known as uncut diamonds. Intricate Indian enamel is a prevalent look in our collection. Two seasons ago, we created a collection where we took Indian silk brocade, also known as “Gota”, and encased it in transparent resin.
ARE YOU UP TO DOING COLLABORATIONS? IF SO, WITH WHICH CELEBRITY/STYLE ICON/DESIGNER WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLABORATE?
We would love to collaborate with Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce to make a collection of dramatic chandelier earrings and cocktail rings.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST PIECE OF JEWELRY YOU CREATED?
Isharya started out with a few pieces when we launched, which are still considered best sellers – the filigree cuff, moon bali earrings, and embellished wooden rings and cuffs.
HOW DO YOU SPLIT THE WORK BETWEEN THE BOTH OF YOU?
Gauri oversees the design process, while Radhika focuses on sales and marketing.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB AS A JEWELRY DESIGNER?
Building a brand from scratch is challenging, yet very exciting.
IF YOU WEREN’T IN THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
Radhika would probably still be an attorney, or an entrepreneur in another field.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU ENCOUNTER WHEN CREATING A COLLECTION/PIECE OF JEWELRY?
Resistance from our vendors to make our new innovative designs which may look complicated at first.
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPANSION PLANS FOR THE MIDDLE EAST?
We have a sales team dedicated to the Middle East market and they are working on getting Isharya in the trendy and luxury department stores and boutiques in the region. We are currently stocked at Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdales.
