Following a summer of trend revivals and experimentation, the Fall/Winter 2016 runway shows continued down the nostalgic route in terms of outerwear. From Gucci’s vibrant detailing to Chanel’s fail-safe neutral tones and Burberry’s memorable black puffer jacket, every shade in the rainbow was ticked off the color charts with stunning results. The fabrics were just as remarkable, incorporating popular trends like tartan, denim, fur, animal print, and vinyl.
Embracing classic silhouettes, the outerwear collections proved that old is new again, from Brock Collection’s brocade coats to Altuzarra’s shearling jackets and Dolce & Gabbana’s military-inspired outerwear. And while Savoir Flair cannot do much about the weather outside, we have compiled the six top outerwear styles to know this season – all of which will make you wish it were freezing cold outside – along with some of the chicest retail picks out there.
What a Man
Taking its cue from menswear, one of the most popular styles this season mixes feminine and masculine elements for an androgynous-chic look. With a growing emphasis on genderless fashion and masculine silhouettes, brands like Courrèges made the trend more wearable by introducing the borrowed-from-the-boys pieces in soft and light hues.
Think: exaggerated shoulder pads, oversized front pockets, and big buttons – the OTT aesthetic makes for a quirky look that is both liberating and fashion forward. Adopted by the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney, and Chanel, statement garments of this sort were given a fresh spin with ultra-feminine detailing, making them this season’s ultimate style darlings.
Dust It Off
Courtesy of the hippie 70s, the sophisticated duster coat is a major hit this season. This dramatic, floor-length frame is the epitome of elegance with just the right amount of edginess. Take Lanvin’s glamorous fur, Miu Miu’s hip tartan, and Aigner’s snow-white wool as examples – the maxi trend makes for easy and elongating pieces to throw on, regardless of their fabric or silhouette.
Fit and Flare
Another treat from the Fall/Winter 2016 runway shows is the dainty flared coat. Available in varying lengths, this romantic silhouette is a reminder that, while the fashion scene may be biased toward a unisex vibe, feminine cuts continue to prevail and make an appearance season after season. Although Chanel went for a slouchier form, Dior and Brock Collection opted for a fitted style – and both interpretations were equally feminine.
One of the prettiest outerwear styles spotted on the runways this season, the cape underwent a seriously glamorous makeover. This year’s designs are refined with sparkles and embellishments, transitioning this otherwise simple style from a day coat to an elegant piece that pairs beautifully with eveningwear.
This winter staple made numerous appearances during Fall/Winter 2016 Fashion Week. Balenciaga gave new life to the puffer jacket by playing with color, fit, and proportions, while Stella McCartney embraced a more practical approach. With a cinched waist and faux-fur collar, the version by Burberry presented a new way to dress up this generally casual style.
