Over the summer, I had the good fortune of going on two back-to-back vacations in the United States. For each trip, I packed roughly two outfits per day – day and evening – with a few swimwear pieces thrown in for good measure. The ironic part is that, for all my careful planning, I ended up wearing the same style nearly every single day. This made me realize that I could reduce my summer travel wardrobe to this one item and pack lighter than I ever have. If only I had figured it out sooner…
I’m speaking (of course) of the beautiful, versatile, and effortlessly easy-to-wear kaftan – a clothing style that originated right here in the Middle East. When it comes to versatility, the kaftan cannot be beat. I wore a gorgeous printed one to a Michelin-starred restaurant and felt glamorous the entire evening. I then wore a simpler kaftan to the beach, a vintage version for a day of exploring museums, and the list goes on.
Anyone who has suffered through one of our region’s unbearable summers knows the practicalities of a lightweight kaftan. Its value, however, is even greater when you realize just how stylish and on-trend this piece of clothing is. With bohemian styles on the rise, now is the perfect time to break out your favorite kaftan – you can get away with wearing one all summer long and no one would bat an eye. Not only are kaftans gorgeous, flattering, and perfect for literally any body type, but their generous sleeves and relaxed silhouettes also provide plenty of ventilation in the scorching heat. They can be dressed up, dressed down, or tossed over a swimsuit, making them one of the most hard-working wardrobe items we can think of.
In appreciation of the kaftan, here is a shopping guide of the best versions on the market to help you rediscover your love of this summer staple.
