The medieval, the maiden, and the modern all came out to play on Giambattista Valli’s romantic Fall 2016 Couture runway. Progressing from themes established in his Spring 2016 Couture show, Valli built on elements borrowed from history, like the mod mini dress and 17th century virago and puffball sleeves, to create a poetic new look for the season. Dreamy, confectionary clothes are nothing new for this designer, but the way the show evolved from shrunken silhouettes to voluminous statement gowns left the admirable impression of an artiste at his peak.

The way the show evolved from shrunken silhouettes to voluminous statement gowns left the admirable impression of an artiste at his peak.

Thigh-skimming frocks decorated with dainty florals, lace crests, and ruffles led the first half of the show, featuring a top-heavy silhouette signified by slim tailoring through the waist with volume found on the sleeves and shoulders. These proportions were balanced by later looks that featured fitted bodices, padded hips, and wide tulle skirts and an array of sheer, fluid goddess gowns.

The couture elements of the collection hardly need mentioning as they were highlighted front and center on every look, but they included surfaces encrusted with 3D petals, tiered tulle layers, bodices fitted with delicate crystal halter straps, and corridors of crystal embroidery etched onto necklines and sleeves. A trio of show closers proved to be a fan favorite on social media and were repeatedly posted as they bounced along the runway in slow motion. In lavender, deep raspberry, and ivory, these three distinctive gowns were marvelously engineered from tulle and looked like liquid color blooming and unfurling in water. They moved like they were alive, and it was exquisite to behold. Where do we sign up for the starring role in Valli’s couture maiden tale?
