In honor of Savoir Flair’s seventh anniversary, our editors each reveal a day in their lives. Read on to learn about the making of a luxury magazine and what goes on behind the scenes as we work — day in and day out — to reveal the Middle East’s most inspirational faces, places, and spaces to our readers.
Meet Savoir Flair’s Fashion Features Editor, Grace Gordon.
My old habit used to be waking up and then spending an hour on my phone in bed, but this girl is on a serious phone detox lately. Now, I wake up and get started on cooking myself a nutritious Paleo breakfast, which I pair with Bulletproof Coffee. My favorite way to start the day is with Paleo Pancakes and a side of bacon. The pancakes – which are made from cream cheese, egg, and a pinch of coconut flour, Splenda, and cinnamon – are so delicious that I now prefer them to the real deal. I also drink a 24 oz. glass of ice-cold water as soon as I wake up to kickstart my metabolism.
I like to keep my energy up in the morning by stretching and doing yoga for 15 minutes, which my cat, Gravy, loves to join in on. Afterward, I cycle on the brand new Schwinn stationary bike that my significant other surprised me with recently. Next, I take the time to indulge in my beauty product obsession by taking a leisurely shower. These are the 7 products that I’m happily keeping in rotation right now.
• Balmain Sea Salt Spray
• Lush Turkish Delight Shower Smoothie
• Crabtree & Evelyn Gardener’s Ultra Moisturizing Hand Therapy
• Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel
• Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturizer
• Harvey Prince Organics Texturizing Mist
Now, it’s time to start answering e-mails, reading important industry sites like Business of Fashion, and getting caught up on what’s going on around the world. One of my roles at Savoir Flair is to conduct interviews, so right now I am working on an interview with someone very, very exciting (hint: she’s major in the beauty world).
After all that work, I’ve worked up an appetite. Since I am strictly Paleo right now, I typically fuel up with protein and a mix of veggies, like this, homemade strawberry salad with chicken, cinnamon pecans, feta, and poppy seed dressing. I also hydrate constantly throughout the day, which is why I carry my Mira Mikati x Shopbop water bottle with me everywhere that I go in an effort to hit 128 oz. a day.
Now it’s time to crack into a juicy op-ed. I like to research while taking comprehensive notes for several hours. During this time I’m usually listening to an awesome new album like Radiohead’s “A Moon Shaped Pool”, Drake’s “Views”, or Beyonce’s “Lemonade”. When I’m done researching, I’ll turn off the music and start writing. Writer’s block is a nasty beast, and it affects me every so often.
Depending on the day, I may take a break from writing, researching, interviewing, etc., to go do my other job! On the side, I’m also a Radio DJ, and I co-host The Oklahoma Rock Show on KOSU and The Spy FM along with Ryan Lacroix. I’ve been a Radio DJ for 4 years so far, and I absolutely love it!
I am usually done writing and editing my features by this time, which means it’s basketball time. Unfortunately, my team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, went to the Western Conference Finals in the NBA, but didn’t beat the Golden State Warriors. So, I satisfy my basketball passion by shooting around with friends.
One of the most exciting parts of my life is that every day is different. Whether I’m interviewing a celebrity or broadcasting on the radio, the texture of my days varies greatly, which means nothing is ever predictable. It also means that I’m always tired – but who in 2016 is getting enough sleep, anyway? I bid the day adieu around midnight, but I’m pretty bad at going right to sleep, so I try to knock myself out by reading a good book. I average reading 5 books a week, and right now I’m deep into Gillian Flynn’s novel Sharp Objects.
