In honor of Savoir Flair’s seventh anniversary, our editors each reveal a day in their lives. Read on to learn about the making of a luxury magazine and what goes on behind the scenes as we work — day in and day out — to reveal the Middle East’s most inspirational faces, places, and spaces to our readers.
Meet Savoir Flair’s Beauty Editor, Frankie Rozwadowska.
I am a complete reformer Pilates addict, and whenever I can, I book a pre-work class at Mojo Pilates in Media City. I set my alarm for as late as possible (I’m an awful sleeper so even extra seconds count), jump out of bed, book an Uber, and down a Nespresso. After brushing my teeth, I grab my workout gear – love a bit of Nike – and a pre-packed bag of clothing and cosmetics that I need for my day, and I’m out the door in under 15 minutes. If I don’t have a class, I always start my day with a mug of hot water with half a lemon squeezed in as it’s a great way to flush out toxins and alkalize the body. On the way to Mojo, I skim through my social-media accounts to see if anything exciting has happened overnight.
After my hour-long Pilates session, I jump in the shower and wash my hair. These days, I’m loving the ‘Invati’ hair range from Aveda – it’s great for me as I have thin hair and am always trying to find ways to make it look bigger and thicker. It also smells like a spa, which is always a good thing.
I moisturize my body after showering, religiously, and I always try to pick more natural products as I really believe in the power of nature. On my face, I use Nuxe’s ‘Nuxellance’ serum followed by moisturizer, while for my hair it’s just a few drops of the Davines ‘OI Oil’ through the ends before I rough dry it. I never do anything else to my hair unless I’m off to a big event or party, in which case I’ll whip out Hershesons’ curling tongs and give myself some natural, beachy waves. I keep my makeup super simple most days, so I’ll use the Nuxe ‘DD Cream’ to give myself just a hint of coverage, Bobbi Brown ‘Skin Serum Concealer’ under my eyes, ‘Hoola Bronzer’ from Benefit (always!), and a slick of Estée Lauder’s ‘Sumptuous Infinite’ mascara. I have my routine down to a tee, so I’m out of the studio by 9.15.
When I do have a morning class, I get to the office just before 9:30 a.m. I sit down at my desk and read through my e-mails and news sites whilst drinking my breakfast. I try to make my own super smoothie at home in my NutriBullet when I have time the night before. It’s a blend of spinach, berries, ginger, coconut water, vegan protein powder, bee pollen, cacao powder, spirulina, and wheatgrass. I promise it tastes better than it sounds, and it keeps me going until lunch.
I try to keep my mornings as free as possible as my afternoons are normally packed with events, so I’ll work on beauty features while drinking copious amounts of green tea. I drink about 4 to 5 cups a day – yes, I’m slightly addicted. I also make sure my drawers are full of healthy snacks to curb my sugar cravings (I also have a very big sweet tooth), like organic popcorn, kale chips, nuts, and raw chocolate. Needless to say, that doesn’t usually last very long…
When it comes to ordering lunch, it’s a pretty painful process for me. To say I’m indecisive would be an understatement – I’m a Libra, so I can’t help it – and I get really bad food envy, so it normally takes me all morning to work out what I want. I think my record is about 4 hours. I’m going through a very big Salad Jar phase at the moment. It has amazing vegan and veggie options that are bursting with fresh, light ingredients. If my day is busy, which it usually is, I eat at my desk. Otherwise, the team sits around our office dining table, and that often results in us talking about Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik.
I’ll carry on working on my features throughout the afternoon, often breaking to have meetings with the team to discuss editorial ideas or meet with PRs, who drop in to have a cup of tea and a macaroon or 2. That’s something that will never, ever get old for me – I still get so excited when I get to try a new product, be it a face cream or a mascara. Being the Beauty Editor at Savoir Flair is a dream come true. I have to pinch myself sometimes.
I’ll spritz on some perfume – anything from Tom Ford – and it’s off to the first of (usually) many events. My days are never the same, so my afternoon could be spent running around town from one product launch to the next or visiting the latest spa to try a treatment. I recently got hair extensions put in by Jen Atkin, stylist to the stars, and being groomed by her glam squad at Belle Femme was one of my most magical moments of late. I’m incredibly lucky that I get to meet some of the world’s biggest names in health and beauty.
If I have time before evening events, getting my nails done is one of my favorite ways to relax and have some “me” time. Depending on where I’ve ended up in town, I’ll book in to N.Bar or The Nail Spa, treat myself to a mani/pedi and a 30-minute back massage, and then head off to my evening soirée with a new lease on life. I normally carry a pair of heels in my bag to strap on and, en route to the event, I’ll touch up my makeup – adding some lipstick and eyeliner easily takes my look from day to night.
The first thing I do when I get home is have a quick shower and put on my pajamas. I love cozy clothes. I’d live in my PJs if I could. I’ll make a cup of ‘sleep tea’ and spend some time Skyping with friends and family in the UK, watching something on Netflix, and catching up on e-mails.
I’m a really bad sleeper, so I have a special nighttime routine to help me switch off at night. About 1 hour or so before bed, I put my phone on silent and don’t let myself check it again before the morning. I spray my bed with the L’Occitane ‘Aromachologie’ pillow spray and then read a book. I love reading, and this is the perfect way to unwind and disconnect from my thoughts of the day.
