Syrian-born, Dubai-based designer Rami Al Ali reveals a Fall/Winter 2016 ready-to-wear collection that is elegance incarnate. The understated glamour of his work is narrated by sleeveless column gowns that come in a surprising palette of jade green, deep orange, dusky rose, and navy blue, while many of the looks feature lavish tone-on-tone embellishment and embroidery. While red-carpet dresses are typically ostentatious, Al Ali’s versions whisper rather than shout. Amid his serene collection are stand-out looks that include a gown carpeted in a dense tapestry of floral appliqués, a feminine pink gown with a full-lace floret bodice that deconstructs as the florets cascade past the hips, and tulle that has been treated to a tweed-effect look and grown-up box pleats.
When speaking to Savoir Flair about his design intentions with this collection, Al Ali, who has dressed some of the world’s most glamorous women like Diala Makki, Beyoncé Knowles, and Kerry Washington, shares, “I wanted to create gowns that consisted of luxurious eveningwear but with a modern approach. Focusing on the feminine figure, I looked at the upper body of the dresses, the use of structure and a careful placement of embellishment that highlighted the cinched-in waist. I then looked to contrast the structural profile with volume and soft multi layers, adding that contemporary feel this season.”
