Classic, old-Hollywood glamour as inspiration? Check. Modern taste and edge? Check. Supreme quality and attention to detail? Check. Premium sunglasses brand Taylor Morris has all of the above covered. Founders Hugo Taylor and Charlie Morris look to the likes of Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, and Marilyn Monroe for inspiration, but update the timeless styles with their signature effortless modernity.
“I was talking with Charlie right as we started designing our first collection and we both unanimously agreed that we wanted to design a collection that you could wear 30 years ago, today, and in 30 years’ time. Capturing the essence of timeless design and imbuing it with an eccentric modernist twist has become the key stone of Taylor Morris’ design ethos,” shares Hugo Taylor, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Taylor Morris.
Following their recent trip to Dubai, Savoir Flair caught up with Taylor and Morris to find out more about the guys behind the brand at the top of everyone’s wish list this season.
How would you describe your personal style?
Charlie: Quite classic and preppy, but with a good dose of bohemianism.
Hugo: I like to think of my style as a mixture of The Great Gatsby and Keith Richards.
How would you describe each other’s style?
Charlie: We have quite similar styles, but I would say Hugo’s a little bit more flamboyant with his dress.
Hugo: Morris’ style is almost perfect. If I had to dress like someone else it would probably be him. I’m sure he doesn’t say the same thing, though. I’m a lot more adventurous – or stupid, depending on which way you regard it.
You are not only business partners but best friends too. Has working together affected your friendship in any way?
Charlie: 100 percent, and in a very positive way. We spend so much time together you’d think we’d get bored of each other, but we don’t.
Hugo: It took us about eight months to work out how to separate the two. We certainly know the boundaries. Of course it has changed things, but what would you rather; work for someone you hate or someone you love?
How is the work process split between the two of you?
Charlie: I have savage OCD, so I focus on the finer details and the nitty gritty bits, whereas Hugo concentrates on the overall aesthetics. This makes us a pretty good duo!
Hugo: Charlie and I of course have our respective roles, but when we do get to collaborate on design it’s the most satisfying time.
What are your favorite spots in Dubai and how do you usually spend your time here?
Charlie: One of my favorite spots is The Palm Jumeirah. Luckily for us, Hugo’s father lives on The Palm so we stay with him when we visit. It’s so tranquil, especially when you get the canoes out for a cheeky sunbathe. Another one of my favorite places is Cove Beach, where we usually host our annual TM volleyball tournament. Sadly, we got knocked out this year, but we’ll be upping our game for next year!
Hugo: I love to be as healthy as possible in Dubai – though it never happens. I love Eden during the day and Coya for dinner.
Which countries or regions inspire you the most?
Charlie: We just got back from a trip to Tulum, Mexico where we were shooting our forthcoming ‘Explorer’ collection. Latin America really inspires me as the colors and the details are so intricate. The trip really got our creative juices flowing.
Hugo: I was taught from a young age to always keep my eyes open and let the world around me inspire me. I am particularly inspired by London and our rich and varied history, which is reflected in the architectural makeup of the city. I studied History of Art and this brings a lot to what I do at Taylor Morris.
