Saudi Arabian fashion designer Razan Alazzouni is one of the region’s most accomplished designers, especially since her talent for couture-level detail work, precise tailoring, and gorgeous hand embellishment and embroidery has provoked the interest of some of the world’s most well-heeled women. By articulating a modern aesthetic, Alazzouni stands apart. For Fall/Winter 2016, she is off to London Fashion Week to display her dazzling new collection, but here on Savoir Flair, you can see a preview of what she has to offer. Her luxe jacquard wrap dresses, embellished skirts, crepe blouses, tweed swing midi dresses, and other wonderfully tailored items are touched with floral and branch embroidery, mink fur pockets and sleeve accents, and more.
The winter collection is influenced by blooms and roses. I wanted to show the structure found in the way a rose’s petals came together in the lines of the clothes.
In an exclusive conversation with Savoir Flair, Alazzouni shares the inspiration behind her latest work, saying, “The winter collection is influenced by blooms and roses. I wanted to show the structure found in the way a rose’s petals came together in the lines of the clothes. Using different fabrics (different weights) like soft tulle, flowy organza, wool, and crepe made it easy to create these layers. The cuts are meant to be modern yet playful. Just the way a flower is.” Her personal favorite items in the collection include “the tulle beaded tops and the organza oversized top. I love how it can be an essential part of your wardrobe,” she continues. “You can wear it under a dress or just on its own with pants or a skirt. And honestly, I have always had a thing for dramatic collars. It’s the most playful piece in the collection and that is most probably why it’s my favorite.”
One aspect of this particular collection that acted as a challenge for Alazzouni was the fact that she designed each piece separately, and then styled them together later. “It was the first time I design that way and it was a challenge,” she confides. “However, I do believe that it gave the collection a more organic feel.”
