“First you will come to the Sirens who enchant all who come near them.” — The Odyssey by Homer
Some of the best collections tell a story, one that enchants and appeals to our innate attraction to archetypes, to tales of heroes and heroines. For Fall/Winter 2016, Temperley London recites a fairytale filled with seafaring lore, and carried out by a cast of mermaids and pirates. Pirates, history’s most fashionable seafaring villains, displayed the evidence of their crimes in the form of glamorous clothing stolen from cargo trunks filled with fine silks, satins, and velvets. This was more than enough fodder for Alice Temperley to base her designs around, and while mermaids were also key characters in the story, their light, dainty looks were overshadowed by Temperley’s amazing pirate garb.
Although the collection has a clear split between mermaid and pirate looks, there is no need to choose allegiance to either. All looks are part and parcel of Temperley’s wondrous treasure trove of options for the forthcoming season.
For Fall/Winter 2016, Temperley begins by retooling the classic pirate cape with “tattoo” appliqués that are borrowed from modern-day ideas of pirates. They depict “Lost at Sea” slogans, anchors, and swallows, and repeat throughout the collection as one of its central motifs. Temperley’s muse is either masculine or feminine, alternating between girlish ruffled dresses and appliquéd frocks and a series of suede suit jackets, vests, and trousers decorated with galloon trim. Other looks include knit separates festooned with vivid digitized florals, buccaneer blouses with enormous bows, and dramatic pirate coats. Some of the pieces in the collection are drop-dead-gorgeous, including a dreamy pair of sheer trousers decorated with embroidered appliqués depicting seahorses and jellyfish, and a body-conscious long-sleeved dress with a mock turtleneck and textured surface made from glittering appliqués. Although the collection has a clear split between mermaid and pirate looks, there is no need to choose allegiance to either. All looks are part and parcel of Temperley’s wondrous treasure trove of options for the forthcoming season.
