Posen’s inspiration this season was arguably one of the coolest women to ever walk the planet.

When it comes to casting, Zac Posen’s Fall/Winter 2016 presentation did a superb job of showcasing a diverse line-up of drop-dead-gorgeous models. However, the collection as a whole suffered from stiff fabrics that swallowed the body in a matronly silhouette, made worse when looks came in a rather dowdy autumnal floral print. Posen’s inspiration this season was Princess Elizabeth of Toro (arguably one of the coolest women to ever walk the planet), which accounts for the prints, but more vivid hues might have served the Princess’ ground-breaking style better.

Although the presentation was more maudlin in appearance than Posen likely intended, it did make up for that fact with a series of gorgeous black dresses and suits, which all sported a glitter trim. The asymmetrical tailoring of these looks coupled with lighter fabrics imbued them with movement. A thick navy neoprene dress with rounded shoulders and crystal paillettes also went into the “win” column, as did a floor-sweeping navy cape in felted wool and a longline gray wool coat that looked like it had arrived from a not-too-distant dystopian future. There was clearly heart and passion in what Posen was trying to achieve on his Fall/Winter 2016 runway, but the execution – as a whole – fell short of the mark.
