If you are looking to Carolina Herrera for a complicated storyline or to be the answer to the future of fashion, you’ll come up short. For the designer, beautiful clothes are the beginning and end of her raison d’être and she is more than adept at faithfully delivering them every season. That’s not to say she’s out of step or out of touch, but rather that her focus is solely on her clothes and not on the rising tide of change that is currently battering the fashion industry. However, for Fall/Winter 2016, Herrera does make one particularly smart fashion move by embracing the trans-seasonal theme with a collection that features floaty goddess gowns fit for a spring soirée alongside muted tartan wool dresses fit for a ride in the English countryside.
Herrera’s message this season is simple: keep calm and carry on.
You feel the split between spring/summer and fall/winter in this collection mostly in the palette, which offers a wash of seafoam, pale mint, taupe, ivory, and feminine jewel tones for spring and neutrals and monochromes for fall. Daywear is reserved for the kind of girl who has a complicated Starbucks order and a wardrobe full of expensive clothes. Sure, she’s high maintenance, but boy does she look good in that floor-scraping button-front dress with a feathery fur vest or in a baby-pink frock and charcoal coat touched with strips of astrakhan fur. Herrera also offers a few sportier looks in seafoam green that feminize the co-ed varsity jacket with fur accents, and she pairs a similar bomber jacket with a divine plunge-front dress.
Eveningwear is where Herrera always shines, and this season is no different. She repeats Spring/Summer 2016’s trompe l’oeil theme by floating textured lace and sheaths of chiffon paneling down the surface of a prim little sheer dress and also shows a floor-length taupe gown with flower-shaped leather cutouts that were reinserted on the surface at haphazard angles. Tiny little floral cutouts make their way onto several looks, in fact, and add life to Herrera’s pristine surfaces. Some of the best looks include a gorgeous magenta shirt-dress with astrakhan insets, a royal-purple mock-corset dress, and a long-sleeved, floor-length tufted gown in a crisp shade of mint. Herrera’s message this season is simple: keep calm and carry on. With her immense talent and industry experience, this designer’s lovely, immutable aesthetic shows no signs of abating.
