If doors could speak, they would have thousands of stories to tell about what goes on behind them — stories of intrigue, heartbreak, madness, joy. What happens behind closed doors is private by the very nature of being protected by a barrier. Designer Reem Al Kanhal, inspired by the beautiful doors of Tunisia — as well as Tunisian culture, the Tunisian flag, and the strength of women — explored the mystery of what happens behind closed doors with a Spring/Summer 2016 Lookbook entitled, If Doors Could Speak.

It is an intriguing proposition to base a clothing collection on, but what is more intriguing is the way Al Kanhal managed to take traditional garb and turn it into the kind of modern marvels that anyone from anywhere would want to wear. A simple, modest, floor-length dress opens the lookbook, but from the rear you can see tasseled closures (which, by the way, can be removed entirely to reveal a bare back). A striped halter look with a buttoned-throat drops into an off-shoulder gown with a stunning, ruffled back; meanwhile a voluminous layered tunic over an optic white dress reveals a tiny doorway cut into the back. This collection plays on the element of surprise, with clean, smooth surfaces in the front and surprising details in the back that prove you never know what goes on behind closed doors.
