Fashion is cyclical and, year on year, the runways are awash with modernized, jazzed-up versions of past trends. You only have to look at the collections by some of today’s biggest designers alongside a fashion history textbook to notice the patterns. The 50s “new look” has dominated the Dior collections since Maria Grazia Chiuri started her post. Michael Kors is notorious for favoring a 60s minidress silhouette. Gucci’s entire aesthetic thrives on reviving icons from the 70s and 80s, while Marc Jacobs has been crowned the king of rejuvenating 90s grunge. So why is it that we are so shocked to see the best – and definitely the worst – of the noughties come back around?
I get it. It’s partly because we lived through these trends at the same time that we began to document everything we did on the internet. We experienced the Facebook uploads, the “like for like” captions, and the embarrassment when looking back at that same album ten years later. And because of this, the cringe factor feels all too fresh to start wearing these questionable trends again. We finally understand what our parents meant when we stepped out in flares and they exclaimed, “Are they really back? I used to have those as a teenager!”
So that brings us to the humble clog. It was the shoe staple of the mid-noughties, filling the wardrobes of every fashion-conscious, easily persuaded woman. And thanks to the Spring/Summer 2018 runways, you better be prepared to witness a clog revival on the streets, in stores, and all over your Instagram feed. As with all fashion, it’s highly down to a personal preference, but this trend is particularly divisive. Known as one of the ultimate “ugly shoes” (second only to Crocs and Uggs), the clog is a winner for those who favor an eclectic or Bohemian aesthetic. It’s unlikely to work for the clean-cut fashion girl though.
Here, Savoir Flair has rounded up the best street-style clog moments to help you decide whether you’re ready to dive foot-first into the trend or sit this one out. Browse the gallery and then voice your opinion in the poll, below.
