America’s favorite pastime received the luxury fashion treatment at the hands of one of America’s favorite sportswear designers for Fall/Winter 2015. Inside the Park Avenue Armory, guests were treated to a spectacle – for the 30th anniversary presentation by the Tommy Hilfiger brand, the space was transformed into a literal football field. There’s nothing quite like the good old-fashion ra-ra-riot-fest of sports, but Hilfiger was wise to inject romantic, luxurious qualities into his collection. In doing so, he elevated his looks beyond the sports arena, making them work for women who could not care less about the final score.

For his presentation, Hilfiger reworked both vintage and modern football jerseys into precocious, collegiate looks replete with rugby stripes, team numbers, and helmet appliqués. The show launched with a navy cape, topped with a striped scarf, and finished with ribbed tights and a football shoe that was transformed into a lace-up platform boot. Darling coats and wool pinafore dresses were followed in quick succession by fur sweatshirts, cheerleader-esque kick-pleat skirts, and wool sweaters that resembled the uniforms worn by early 1930s leatherheads. Romance à la Ali MacGraw in Love Story was carried out by velvety dresses, which were matched with sheer bishop sleeves. Cozy varsity jackets, wool cardigans, and fur hoodies sent an appreciative murmur through an audience that has struggled through New York’s freezing temperatures to attend shows this season. Modern football elements crept in toward the end, as logo-splashed leather mini dresses, leather ponchos, and leather A-line skirts took the field. What better way to celebrate a 30-year reign in American sportswear than to take your anniversary collection to the end zone for a touchdown?
