Atelier Versace exists for the flawless ones, which is why it’s favored by genetically gifted stars the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, and Angelina Jolie. It takes more than good posture and toned muscles to pull off Versace, however; it takes confidence. For Atelier Versace’s Spring 2015 Couture show, confidence made use of the body’s living contours, and Donatella Versace bent fabric to her whim with sculptural shaping used to support her sensual aesthetic.
The presentation demonstrated two distinct approaches to seduction. One is covered up, borderline modest, and erred on the side of restraint. The other bared everything in stages, like an exotic dance that teased out desire slowly. A series of conservative looks launched the show with all-black or all-white long-sleeved jumpsuits and tailored separates. The core of the couture collection relied on a repeated motif, which strategically allowed skin to play a part in the overall look, making it the contrast to the negative space of jagged necklines, cutouts, and flesh-baring sculpted panels. Solid shades of royal blue, siren red, virgin white, and jet black flowed along the curves of the body’s topography, enhancing and obscuring it in all the right places.
Versace also relied on a variety of transparent materials to help reveal the body underneath, such as mesh, spider-web lace, and honeycomb beading over sheer nude fabric. By the end, the heat was turned up so high that the stunning Eva Herzigova and Amber Valletta finale, to the tune of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing, was almost too much to bear.
