Because the primary component of high fashion is fantasy, literally anything is fair game when it comes to the inspiration behind a collection. While it may be slightly strange that Alexander Wang decided to reinterpret sneakers as clothing for Spring/Summer 2015, it should come as no surprise when we consider just how the much-hyped footwear trend of the streets has come to inform the runway. For Wang, however, this was more than just seizing an opportunity to show splashy sneakers on the catwalk; it was a chance to show what it might look like if said sneaker was transformed into a skintight dress or contoured pair of trousers.
Looks gave way to reinterpreted Nike ‘Flyknits’ imagined as neon frocks and Adidas ‘Stan Smiths’ transformed into flirty tennis dresses. That being said, the feeling of control and discipline ran straight through this collection, and Wang’s precisely sculpted looks were imbued with taut athleticism. The results are achingly hip and razor sharp, especially when Wang mocks the special-edition, patent-leather look of the Nike ‘Air Force One’ by transforming it into a shift dress.
With all of the graphic sensibilities, touches of texture, and tight lines of this Spring/Summer 2015 collection, we’re left with an early impression that it might not get any cooler this Fashion Month than Wang’s runway.
