For Fall 2014 Couture, Alexandre Vauthier presented an intense collection of vaunted, glamorous excess. Although the shapes of his streetwear-infused presentation are familiar, they are reimagined for couture runway with exquisite details like pearl beading, complicated fabric construction and intelligent, body-enhancing tailoring. The labor for beading for his slouchy cardigans clocked in at over 100 hours apiece, while another look called for the time-consuming task of placing 196,000 stones along the exterior. It’s a bit thrilling to find such fine craftsmanship mixed casually with geometric printed streetwear parkas, and high-waisted glossy pleat-front trousers. Yet, Vauthier’s high-low mix is purposeful as it captures the way his real clients wear his pieces. Smoldering sexuality ran rampant throughout the collection, revealing taut tummies, hips and backsides with nary a notion of modesty. Although couture exists as a possible reality for so few, it would be thrilling to see some of these looks on the street. But, we’ll have to wait for that moment until they’re snapped up by Rihanna, Beyonce, and the rest of the ne plus ultra glam squad.
