It takes a little time to find one’s audience, but Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent has his rock ‘n roll followers on lock for Fall/Winter 2014. Bang! Bang! Bang! With precision he knocks down sexy counter-culture look after sexy counter-culture look – some of which included a gold revolver print, taking the gun-site accuracy of his collection to edgy heights. This collection is all Brit and grit and you-can’t-sit-with-us attitude.
Part of Slimane’s focus this season was the schoolgirl, but not the one who spends her time finishing extra-credit work at the library. His schoolgirl is mean and surly, but you know under all the shrunken leather blazers, look-at-me-sequins and sexpot mini dresses that she’s copping an act. Models worked that angle well in their disheveled hair, sporting the blank-eyed stare of too-worldly teenagers. If this all seems too precious and staged, there are plenty of high-fashion moments to force a reconsideration – shingled leather dresses, watercolor furs, and frocks made of hand-sewn metal discs were there to prove that luxe still has a place in the line-up. The formula was simple and straightforward, but still managed to deliver a big punch. Saint Laurent’s girl is glittering and gamine, and even if we don’t typically dress like her, we envy her nonetheless.
