Charles Dickens once said, “In a utilitarian age, of all other times, it is a matter of grave importance that fairy tales should be respected.” While all odds are that he wasn’t referring to the fashion industry, his words ring true as a commentary on the world we live in and the aspirational role that fashion plays in our lives and the escape that it provides. For the forthcoming season, Dolce & Gabbana went one step further and brought to life a veritable fairytale on its runway.

For the forthcoming season, Dolce & Gabbana went one step further and brought to life a veritable fairytale on its runway.

All the characters were present, from the woodland animals – foxes, birds, squirrels, and adorable owls – appliquéd onto garments to the designers’ take on the Little Red Riding Hood. All grown up, she now has a penchant for dark greens and animal fur – perhaps a result of her traumatic experience with a wolf in her childhood? Valiant knights dripping in jewels and crystals had traded in their traditional mail coifs for more dazzling versions, paired with gloves, which were covered in so many beads and paillettes so as to resemble armor, and medieval-style boots with gothic appliqués. There were also woodland fairies dressed in bouffant fur shorts peppered throughout the presentation. The princess and villain also make an appearance in Dolce & Gabbana’s Sicilian fairytale, the former dressed in billowing, empire-line, floral-printed gowns, and the latter in strict, austere black looks – not unlike the ones found in previous collections – offering a welcome counterpoint, a welcome break from all of the glitz and glam of the collection.

In spite of all the references to fairytales and the “cute” elements – think big flowers and childish animal appliqués – that aren’t usually commonplace for this brand, the collection remained 100 percent Dolce & Gabbana. Indeed, the familiar silhouettes, which you will have spotted time and time again over the past few seasons, were covered in lace and jewels and imbued with a fatal dose of understated sensuality – the designing duo’s forte. We have Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to thank for providing us with an escape this week, albeit a short one.
