At its distilled essence, Zac Posen’s creative talent is pure, natural, and uncontrived. He has an extraordinary eye for line and form, the tailoring skills of a young Christian Dior, and an innate sense of glamour. Posen’s love of fantasy and his desire to act as Fairy Godmother to his legion of fans has gotten in the way of his work in the past. However, Fall/Winter 2014 heralds change for the brand as Posen self-imposes fabric and color palette limits on his collection. The results are simply stunning.

His scaled-back technique eschews embellishment in favor of crafty cutting, brilliant draping, and jaw-dropping shapes. His work instantly recalls classic Hollywood style; the presentation absolutely radiates with references to Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor. Last night, silhouette-skimming wool suits, silky wiggle dresses, and floor-sweeping opera coats rocked the runway and stunned attendees even in the absence of Posen’s signature sparkle. One black gown showed off a bat-ear bustier bodice and then dove down the lines of the body to end in a flirty mermaid skirt, while sleeveless ball gowns swept the width of the runway with awe-inspiring necklines. We cannot wait to see New Hollywood glamazons in these gorgeous red carpet winners. Here’s to Posen’s smartly edited Fall/Winter 2014 collection, along with hope that he keeps this fascinating aesthetic alive for next season.
