Every season, BCBG Max Azria is taxed with an opening-day slot at New York Fashion Week, effectively kicking off a month-long onslaught of runway shows. It’s a tenuous position to be in. As Fashion Week continues on to London, Milan, and Paris, certain trends begin to emerge and a designer can either prove to be in-step with the industry or end up heading in the wrong direction. Designer Max Azria, however, is a pro and, to put it in colloquial terms, this ain’t his first rodeo. For Fall/Winter 2014, he taps into a welcome return of casual luxury, cornering a hint of haute hippie exoticism that makes the fluid lines of his relaxed daywear dresses, robes, and cozy fur jackets even more appealing. The mood is subdued, elegant, and athletic with leather blouses, patchwork coats, and stunning oversized calfskin blazers preparing to take us forward into winter’s unforgiving environment. Once BCBG’s languid new direction is established, the brand ups the style factor by adding graphic stripes, abstract prints, and contrasting textures to the mix. Let’s hope to see more effortlessly chic and fantastically wearable garb from the rest of the designers at fashion week.
