Outside it was raining and dreary, but inside the Temperley London venue the catwalk was alive with romance and Old Hollywood glamour.
Look out the window and picture a place far away from here, a place where vines creep over sun-bleached awnings and the sound of the ocean is never out of earshot. For Spring/Summer 2014, Alice Temperley of Temperley London created a romantic mood for a Mediterranean afternoon. This is occasion dressing with a daydream twist.
Temperley opens the show with a striped gazar-silk gown and matching car coat, featuring wide swaths of carnation, fuchsia, and royal-purple paneling. Chain-link and cross-weave patterns add visual bite to the pretty frocks presented, and volumes give the collection an extravagant makeover. Temperley’s silver-screen star touchstone, Grace Kelly, was present in the black-and-white crisscross dress with cape sleeves and the gleaming peach, black, and ivory floor-sweeping gown. This is a fitting move for a designer whose clientele includes Britain’s heir to the throne. There are a few showstoppers in the mix, like an exquisite embroidered gown with pink bow details, a black jacket made from enormous organza ruffles, and the detailed, impressively embroidered closing look. Realistically, clothes this gorgeous aren’t meant for vacations; they’re meant for important gala affairs and red carpet events – which is likely to be where you will find them next.
