It’s startling how quickly a designer can develop in a new direction. That’s not to say, however, that designer Elie Saab is abandoning his gorgeous, red carpet-worthy looks for Fall 2013 Couture. Most of the time, his collections are abundantly subtle, but, this time, around he hits the audience full in the face with blood-red looks that rocket his soft, romantic gowns to the upper echelons of suggestive sensuality. Okay, Elie Saab, you’ve got our attention.
Saab’s collection is a journey through the elements as the sun traverses the globe. At first, Saab takes this heart-pumping shade and transforms it into several types of gown: first, lean, sheer, and shimmering, then princess cut and overlaid with lace and sequins, and finally long-sleeved and V-necked. The variations continue. After the onslaught of feverishly beautiful dresses, Saab douses the flame with a slow crawl of sequins against frosty, aloof gowns. Suddenly, it is midnight in Saab’s court and the gowns change color again into inky, aching shades of midnight blue, navy, and royal purple. When the sun rises on our glittering night, the gowns become light once more, before falling into an emerald sea. Washed ashore, the dresses are sand-colored and filled with light and movement. Saab’s journey through fire and ice, day and night, ocean and sand is fashion’s version of The Odyssey.
