We’re willing to wage that you’ve read a fashion review or two in your lifetime, so when we talk about the ultimate purpose of the clothes – how they’ll make you feel, how they’ll make you look – they are descriptions borne of imagining it for ourselves. For Fall/Winter 2013, Phillip Lim designs a knockout collection whose entire raison d’ être is to make you look cool.
The aforementioned message of “cool” is clear from the outset: the first look is a tobacco miniskirt in polished leather topped with a salmon-pink, knee-length neoprene quilted jacket. This mix of textures is one accomplishment, but he also mixes up prints and solids to great aplomb. And the leather – my goodness – he’s doing it all: leather tunics, leather sweatshirts, leather vests, and a cadre of leather jackets so supple and gorgeous that he’s sure to give Rick Owens a run for his money. Zippers, knee-high leather boots, gaiters, fur, and wheat prints are a few of the key details, but Lim won’t stop until he’s exhausted the cool tap. Hip, fresh, street – whatever label you want to slap on this bounty of beautiful looks, it just doesn’t quite get to the heart of how amazing you’ll feel in them. Head-turning not your thing? Maybe play it safe with another brand. 3.1 Phillip Lim is giving cool girls exactly what they want.
