No one but Victoria Beckham’s inner circle knows if she ever really cuts loose, but, if her latest offerings for Fall/Winter 2013 are any indication, she’s becoming more relaxed in her position as head of a legitimate fashion empire. This is signaled in the refreshing fluidity of her fall presentation, which sports a softer silhouette and cozy Intarsia knits.
With the Becks back in Britain and David setting off to Paris Saint-Germain, European refinement is this collection’s sine qua non. Restricted by Beckham’s acute obsession with modern minimalism, Parisian polish and a palette of lemon, cobalt, black, taupe, and dove grey are balanced with a cadre of plaids that address a strong British heritage factor.
Exteriors remain unfussy while all of the detail work goes into construction. Cashmere sweater dresses, midi-length skirts with center slits, and toppers sporting shapely sleeves are just a few of the pieces that Beckham fans will be clamoring for next season. Beckham adds touches of contrast to enliven the presentation, attaching inky-black sleeves, collars, and belts to many of the looks. Towards the end, she tries her hand at remixing Altuzarra’s ingenious cape/blazer hybrid from Spring/Summer 2013 by blending it with a look pulled from Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘Le Smoking’ collection. The result is a tuxedo/cape hybrid that is as sophisticated as it gets. Part of the appeal of the Beckham line is fantasy – the idea that in buying one of her pieces, you are allowed to live vicariously through her. Fantasy aside, you will certainly feel Posh in one of her dresses.
