“How does she do it?” This is probably the thought that goes through your head when you see a woman who looks polished and perfectly styled every single time you see her. The chances are that she’s following most, if not all, of the steps listed below. From approaching every week with a prepared outfit for each day to keeping an emergency-repair kit on hand, Savoir Flair’s handy guide brings you the eight things that every fashion girl should be doing on a regular basis.
Do the Prep Work
Every Saturday night, prepare a week’s worth of outfits and sort them out by day. You can even take your weekly preparation one step further by checking the week’s weather forecast and assembling your clothes accordingly. By taking the time to do this, you will save yourself a tremendous amount of time getting ready each and every morning.
Become Besties with a Good Tailor
Find a great tailor and trust them to perfect the clothes that don’t fit quite right. Whether the sleeves are too long or the hemline is too short, the existing pieces in your wardrobe will be maximized with the help of a good tailor. They can also help you fit better into the clothes you buy on your future shopping trips. Schedule a regular visit to your tailor. We suggest once every two months, depending on how frequently you shop.
Perform Spring Cleaning – All Year Round
Every four to six months, take a few hours to clean and overhaul your closet. One way to know what clothes are idling away, unworn, is to turn all of your clothes around so that the hangers face backwards. Every time you wear something, place it back in your closet with the hanger facing the correct way. In a few months, you’ll be able to clearly see the clothes that you never wear based on the hangers still facing the wrong way.
Invest in Key Pieces
Fashion changes quickly, so instead of buying into all of the trends at the same time or mindlessly purchasing from fast-fashion brands, we suggest investing in a few hero pieces each season instead. Do your research. If you think you can wear that item with more than three outfits in your existing wardrobe, then go for it.
Create (and Maintain) a Fashion-Emergency Kit
Replenish your handy fashion-emergency kit. Make sure it’s well stocked with a mini sewing kit, some safety pins and band-aids, a lint roller, a stain-remover pen, and double-sided adhesive tape. Several companies even sell miniature kits of this sort that can be stashed in your purse for on-the-go repairs.
Update who you follow for style inspiration. Add or unfollow according to your evolving style preferences – just keep in mind that the most important thing is to find new inspiration that suits you. Keep an eye out for emerging “It” girls and brands to help you keep your image-based inspiration well stocked.
Update Your Staples
Staples like high-quality denim, leather jackets, Oxford button-ups, or pencil skirts are absolutely essential to extending the life of your wardrobe. However, the nature of staples means they will be worn more often than the other pieces in your closet. Keep them up-to-date by refreshing them every few years – this step includes quality underwear.
Create an Individual Style
Develop a signature style, and then a uniform based on your signature style. This will eliminate future wardrobe problems, bring cohesion to your closet, and help you dress with confidence every morning. For help with creating your own signature style, check out Savoir Flair’s guide here.
