Stepping into the new year feels like entering the future. Things that science fiction had predicted are now a reality – from Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality to watches that can read your mood and track your sleeping patterns. A few decades ago, being a geek was the opposite of chic, but nowadays the coolest thing you can be is a nerdy girl with a true appreciation of all things sci-fi and fantasy related – and Nicolas Ghesquière agrees.
The Creative Director of Louis Vuitton took the reigns of the house with early collections that introduced a new kind of “normal”, blending normcore and retro inspiration into the kinds of clothes that were destined to sell out everywhere. While he was at the forefront of the throwback backlash (or retro revival, as some have dubbed the past few seasons in fashion), Ghesquière was also looking to the future and considering how to develop ideas that would meet the rising geek-chic zeitgeist.
In fact, his next move was foreshadowed by the futuristic set he created for his Spring/Summer 2016 show in Paris, which depicted a movable, cubist backdrop inspired by Japanese anime. Next came the surprise announcement that Lightning, a pink-haired heroine from the Final Fantasy series, would be the star of Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2016 ad campaign. It should come as no surprise that a cutting-edge designer like Ghesquière would land on a truly inspired icon that would fulfil our desire for all things future-forward. Last week, he posted images on his personal Instagram account of Lightning holding a gorgeous bag from the forthcoming collection. The enthusiastic response in the comment section of his post indicates that the designer is adept at reading the moment and picking the perfect figure to complement his forward-thinking designs.
