To achieve perfect synthesis between a contemporary street-inspired aesthetic and respect for one’s Middle Eastern heritage is no easy feat. While the two qualities aren’t mutually exclusive, they are at rather opposite ends of the design spectrum. Fortunately, the Dubai-based designer behind new brand Talar Nina, Talar Bilemjian, is the kind of considered philosopher of fashion who makes such a fusion look effortless. The basis for her design is simple – she takes the classic bomber jacket and updates it with bespoke textiles, embellishment, and other luxe details.
Bilemjian also places a personal twist on her designs by incorporating childhood memories from summers spent in Jordan and Los Angeles into her work. “I used to love seeing bedouins wearing their leather bombers over their dishdashas in Amman,” she shares exclusively with Savoir Flair. “I also remember my grandfather, who lived in LA and was a big tennis player, wearing his Fila jackets and New Balance sneakers. The bomber jacket has always been one of my favorite staples, and sportswear has always been a big part of my identity. I also wanted to share my love of unique textiles with people and make them feel special when they wore one of my pieces. A bomber jacket is a key staple that everyone should have in their closet; it’s comfortable, yet chic, depending on what you wear it with.”
Bilemjian also honors her heritage in other subtle ways. For instance, her logo, designed by one of her best friends, was inspired by the Armenian alphabet. “The small symbol in the middle of the logo is part of the brand’s identity – it is the ancient Armenian symbol for eternity. As Yves Saint Laurent once said, ‘Fashion fades, but style is eternal,’ right?”
