Putting a modern spin on traditional clothing is no easy feat. There is a balancing act that must occur, one that perfectly honors tradition while celebrating new, cutting-edge designs in fashion. Fortunately, Bouguessa’s creator, Faiza Bouguessa, is adept at adaptation, as evidenced by her brilliant line of abaya-inspired attire. In fact, her collections are so stylish that they are willingly embraced by women who have never worn an abaya in their lives. In an exclusive interview with Savoir Flair, Bouguessa reveals the inspiration behind her work, stating, “I like to portray my love for architecture through sharp tailoring and my love for art through graphic color blocking. Global fashion is obviously another source of inspiration. I look into fashion a lot and my commitment is to introduce global fashion trends into modest clothing. It is not an easy task, because it has to be subtle and look natural, and it has to respect the modest clothing ‘guidelines’. I also try to create wearable pieces that are functional and comfortable, not only something that is visually appealing.”
Her Spring/Summer 2016 collection is a strong indicator that she knows exactly how to draw contemporary designs into the realm of the modest and comfortable, without sacrificing an ounce of style. For the season, she was “inspired by a modern Safari escape,” which translates into smart safari dresses, lightweight tunics, and shapely folded skirts. When we asked who she keeps in mind while designing, Bouguessa responds, “A woman who is family oriented, but who is also very involved in her city’s cultural life and who loves to attend art exhibitions and other cultural events. A woman who is fashion conscious, updated, and willing to try new styles and labels as long as it suits her personal style. I would like to see women being able to express a strong fashion sense through Bouguessa but still keep their full identity. I envision women who are modern, subtly well put together, elegant, and refined. These are the women who inspire me. They don’t need to have a loud style, just something that complements their femininity. Women for whom fashion is a natural aspect of life. ”
