When I moved from Oklahoma City to Dubai many years ago, I had my closest friends over to go through my closet and take what they wanted. I remember so clearly the moment before they arrived when I stood before the precious things I was parting with, feeling bereft. It was like I was saying goodbye to so many of my past selves. This is a feeling Miuccia Prada is acquainted with. For Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2024, she wanted to evoke the emotion of clothes, the idea that they aren’t simply pieces of clothing but pieces of lives, reflections of who we are in certain moments.

Therefore, the collection boiled down Mrs. Prada’s iconography to its essence, each look representing a reflection of her past self, a fragment from a previous collection or era of the house. Crumpled silks, lurid “bad taste” prints, layered styling, Mary Janes, tights, sweater sets – this visual language of Mrs. Prada is now so familiar that I could pick it out in a dark room with my eyes closed. It felt very quintessentially Miu Miu, but also like a fresh start for a brand that’s been focusing on shrinking and shrinking proportions until models were literally walking down the runway in underwear. With lengths suddenly redistributed, featuring longer midi lengths and sensible 1950s-inspired proportions, the underwear-as-daywear trend suddenly looked passé. That is how strong Mrs. Prada’s convictions are as a designer and how influential she is. Hem lengths used to rise and fall based on the availability of materials; now, they rise and fall at the whim of Mrs. Prada.

For those for whom the phrase “quintessential Miu Miu” needs no further explanation (IYKYK), let’s dissect the most magnetic aspects of the collection. I loved the awkward spill of pearls from necklines, squashed flat slippers, and oversized, thick, croc-effect gloves. I was intrigued by the appearance of clinical nurse’s uniforms worn with faux furs. I paused for a long time on an acid green suit comprised of a cropped jacket and midi-length skirt paired with grey knit tights. I obsessed over those twee peacoat-esque sweater dresses and the fullness of the flower-emblazoned dirndl skirts. And then there were her shrunken leather jackets. I couldn’t decide which I liked better, the one Mrs. Prada showed at Miu Miu or Prada – both were fabulous.

What’s even more interesting about the whole ensemble of rapid-fire Miu Miu-isms was the casting, shown on models of various ages and heights and demonstrating the long-life appeal of the collection. The Miu Miu “girl” at every age. What a lovely notion.
