Is dressing down the new dressing up? Find out why fashion brands are turning to more casual looks this season.

article VICTORIA BECKHAM

After a period where many of us were confined to our homes for extended durations, there was a fervent return to the joy of dressing up. Many sought the thrill of donning their best attire, using fashion to infuse glamour into their everyday lives. This revival saw a surge in sequins, iridescent fabrics, embellishments, tulle, taffeta, and other over-the-top styles. Designers eagerly embraced this trend, aiming to reintroduce opulence into fashion after an era of minimalist, understated looks.

However, this wave of glamour was short-lived. Many seasoned fashion aficionados recognized the value of comfort. Recalling days when the height of dressing up was simply wearing jeans, a tank top, and perhaps a blazer for special virtual meetings, it's clear that even top-tier fashion designers appreciate the charm of basic, essential styles.

The Fall/Winter 2023 runway shows displayed this transition. Brands presented simpler key ensembles, foregoing the sparkles for a more restrained aesthetic. From oversized jeans paired with a plain T-shirt to a timeless shirt styled with a straightforward skirt, here are some of our favorite laid-back styles of the season and where to find them.

article GUCCI

On the runways of Milan, Paris and beyond, a clear trend emerges among iconic brands embracing the dressed-down aesthetic, each bringing its unique twist.

Balenciaga, known for its extremes, juxtaposed ultra-exclusive Haute Couture with old-school casual vibes this season. Demna's standout was undeniably the casual-chic ensemble, highlighting baggy jeans, a black roll-neck, and a beige oversized trench. In a similar vein, Gucci, with its pulse on the contemporary, showcased the quintessential cool-girl-chic style. Their Fall/Winter 2023 collection blended a classic white shirt with oversized jeans, topped with a relaxed blazer, capturing an effortless elegance.

BALENCIAGA

Bottega Veneta and Versace, while holding onto their distinct identities, both nodded to nostalgic fashion elements. Matthieu Blazy's Bottega Veneta reinvigorated the 90s tank top, pairing a white version with blue jeans and accenting the look with a maroon shoulder bag boasting the signature Intrecciato weave. On the other hand, Donatella Versace, no stranger to opulence, gave a nod to the dressed-down trend by complementing a classic white shirt with straight-cut jeans. Her addition of pointed heels and oversized elbow-length black gloves infused the ensemble with a dash of Versace glamour.

Etro and Victoria Beckham, though contrasting, both emphasized individuality. Etro's unique casual spin showcased wide bootleg jeans harmonized with a pussy neck blouse and a checked sleeveless jacket. A hint of sophistication can be achieved by adding heels and statement earrings. Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham, often mirroring her personal style in her designs, ventured into uncharted territory. Her ensemble of a floor-length denim skirt paired with an oversized grey knit epitomizes cozy fashion, making it the go-to winter-warming look.
