The tradition of wedding cakes began in medieval times when guests would each bring a small cake to a wedding. The cakes were then stacked on top of each other and shared. Nowadays, the messy practice has been replaced with the beautiful tiered cake that has become a traditional staple across many cultures. But how exactly does on decide on flavor, embellishment, shape, size, and number of levels?
Savoir Flair has teamed up with Magnolia Bakery’s Chief Baking Officer, Bobbie Lloyd, and rounded up the ten most important tips to help you find the cake of your dreams.

1. Have a general idea of the cake style you’re looking for. This will help you choose the best place to get your wedding cake and help you narrow down the design options.

2. Plan ahead!
We recommend that couples reach out at least six months early to plan and coordinate the type of cake and desserts they’d like to have. Be sure to reach out early to allow for the tasting and changes to the design.

3. Have a set budget in mind.
Depending on the size and style of cake you’re interested in, the cost can vary quite a bit. It’s helpful to have a budget in mind before speaking with a bakery so that they can show you options that best work within your price range.

4. Fondant or buttercream? At Magnolia Bakery, we design all of our cakes using classic American buttercream – they taste as good as they look! You may, though, prefer a different type of finishing, like fondant. It’s important to have a sense of what you prefer ahead of time so the bakery you’re meeting with can show you the best options.

5. Know what kind of desserts you’re generally interested in featuring at your wedding.
Some couples prefer to have a tiered cake – a beautiful statement piece – and some prefer a variety of desserts to be featured. In those cases, we recommend that the couple gets a smaller tiered cake and then incorporate a variety of desserts throughout a table to create a beautiful display.

6. Bring inspirational photos to your wedding cake tasting.
At Magnolia Bakery, we use our wedding lookbook as a starting point with couples when discussing the design of a cake. We know, though, that designing a cake, just like every element of your wedding, is very personal. If there’s any particular design you’re interested in, it’s helpful to bring photos along with you so that you can clearly communicate the style you’re looking for.

7. Be sure to taste the cake!
Once you decide on a style and cake size, be sure to set up a wedding cake tasting so you can choose the cake flavor and filling that works best for you (plus, it’s a great excuse to enjoy some cake).

8. Don’t forget about the details!
Besides wedding cake toppers, couples also incorporate flowers and special details onto their cakes. It’s important to keep these elements in mind as you’re planning the design, as they can affect the type of finishing used.

9. Don’t be afraid of flavor.
Many couples opt for a traditional vanilla wedding cake, but there’s also a lot of room to have fun with the cake flavor you’re offering. We have a variety of flavors to offer, including red velvet, hummingbird, lemon, and pistachio. In some cases, they can be mixed on a tiered cake or served separately on a beautiful dessert table.

10. Remember, it’s your cake.
We want to be sure that you walk away happy with the cake flavor and design you’ve chosen. You know best what works for you and your event. Be honest about what you like and don’t like so we can help you design the perfect cake and desserts for your big day.
