Dubai has some of the best restaurants in the world, which makes dining out in this city a pleasure. However, if you’re anything like us, dining out can also mean overdoing it. With this predicament in mind, we’ve consulted chef Andrew Matthews of Dubai’s health-conscious eatery Ultra Brasserie for his tips on how to navigate healthy eating while dining out in our delicious, but high-on-the-calories, city.
1. Do Your Research.
Visit the restaurant’s website or www.menupages.ae to read through the entire menu and plan your order in advance. Don’t hesitate to call ahead to inquire about healthier variations of off-the-menu dishes.
2. Don’t Rush the Decision.
If you don’t have time to study the menu in advance, opt to order last. This will give you additional time to choose your meal wisely. Don’t get rushed into making a poor eating decision.
3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions.
Don’t be afraid to ask your server to replace unhealthy ingredients with healthier substitutes. For example, trade in those fries for a side of steamed vegetables.
4. Avoid the Soup and Salad Trap.
Just because it sounds healthy doesn’t mean it is. Creamy soups and salad dressings are packed with calories. Avoid all cream-based soups, be sure to ask for all salad dressings on the side, and opt for a balsamic vinaigrette.
5. Eat Protein.
Protein is the best way to feel full for a longer period of time. Be sure to incorporate protein-rich ingredients, such as seafood, egg whites, and nuts, into your meal.
6. Substitute Quinoa for Rice and Zoodles for Pasta.
Quinoa is packed with protein, fiber, zinc, and vitamin E, and is the perfect replacement for starchy carbs. The same goes for zucchini noodles (served on the Ultra menu) in place of pasta.
7. Lose the Bun.
Replace it with a lettuce wrap instead.
8. Think before You Drink.
Put down that soda and try seltzer water with lime instead. Water, apart from keeping your skin glowing and your waistline slim, will help make you feel more full, so drink up.
9. Slow Down.
Give your stomach a chance to realize that it’s full – and properly taste and enjoy your food.
10. Take It to Go.
Restaurant portions are notoriously large, so we recommend boxing up at least one third of your meal for later.
