From having its own dedicated national holiday in the United States (April 12th, in case you were wondering) to a place in modern pop culture (think: Johnny Depp in Benny & Joon grilling his sandwich with an iron), the grilled-cheese sandwich holds an undeniable place in our hearts – and our stomachs.
The latest addition to Dubai’s gastro-pub scene, British-American haunt The Black Lion, celebrates the grilled-cheese sandwich in all its glory with an entire menu category dedicated to its many variations. Expect to find combinations like Monterey Jack with beef tomato, BBQ pulled chicken and cheese, or Cajun shrimp with Mozzarella. If you’re more of a traditionalist, just ask for a plain cheese melt.
The sandwiches, along with pizzas and gourmet hotdogs, are all part of the restaurant’s ‘Lock In’ menu, which replaces its regular menu (featuring surf-and-turf platters, British classics like fish and chips, and a succulent lamb hot pot cooked for eight hours) from 11:30 onwards. With a kitchen that stays open until 3 a.m. every night, The Black Lion is the ideal spot for a late-night meal, a post-club craving, or just a night out with friends.
Savoir Flair also recommends looking out for the American roast on Saturdays and Sundays, the wide selection of milkshakes and the deep-filled apple pie, and the business lunch that offers great value for money at just AED 65.
The Black Lion is located at the H Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road. For reservations, call (+971) 4 359 2366.
