These days, it seems nearly mandatory to have an attractive female DJ spinning at any fashion event aiming to generate hype. From international personalities such as Alexa Chung and Hannah Bronfman to regional DJs Tala Samman and Natalya and Reem Kanj, a crop of young, stylish turntable personalities (otherwise known as She-Jays) has become a fixture on the music scene. This Sound Cloud-obsessed coterie can be spotted at a dizzying number of launch events and after-parties or on the front row of major runway shows from DKNY to Chanel. With wardrobes as cool and cutting-edge as their playlists, and their hand in everything from brand ambassadorships to fashion apps, they’ve caught Savoir Flair’s attention.
Model, muse, TV personality, and all around “It” Girl Alexa Chung is in large part responsible for making DJing look cool. Notable gigs include Lacoste’s 4th annual desert party at Coachella, Burberry’s Serpentine Summer party, and the Moschino for Fashion Night Out event. Oh, and did we mention she’s a published author?
Spinning for everyone from Topshop to Valentino, Leyland, who is a relative newcomer to the DJ scene, has quickly become one of the most in-demand DJs to date. In addition to her turntable gigs, she’s also modeled for Gucci, has been showcased in Dove’s women campaign, and worked on a film with MTV about the rise of female DJs.
She’s the house DJ for Dior Beauté, is signed to Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation, and has been featured in campaigns for everyone from Net-a-Porter to Hermès. With her Brazilian model mother’s good looks, Viera-Newton is certainty one to watch – and listen – out for.
Hannah Bronfman’s notable gigs include the Grammy’s pre-party alongside performer John Legend and Art Basel festivals. She has also launched an app called Beautified, which allows users to book last-minute beauty appointments in New York City.
Natalya and Reem Kanj
Most recently spotted DJing at the Tiffany & Co. boutique in Dubai, the Kanj sisters – the blogging duo behind Five Five Fabulous – have set their sights on the turntables as well.
Sama and Haya Khadra
Sisters, best friends, and fashion icons Sama and Haya Khadra have been moonlighting as a DJ duo for quite some time now. Spotted everywhere from store openings to Fashion Weeks, and more recently at the Roberto Cavalli party thrown by Peter Dundas during Milan Fashion Week, this stylish pair brings its signature 90s style to the DJ booth.
Indie singer and model Solange Knowles has carved out a name for herself DJing parties from Brooklyn to Dubai. In fact, you might have spotted her at Level Shoe District a few years ago. When she’s not behind a booth or on the microphone, she’s acting as a brand ambassador for the likes of Puma and Madewell.
This summer, Dubai-based blogger Tala Samman announced on her Instagram account that she’d been working on her DJ skills for the past year. Since then, we’ve seen Samman spinning everywhere from the recent Mochi fashion show to S*uce boutique events.
