If you live in Dubai, there is no way you could have missed the signs announcing His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum‘s vision to make Dubai the world’s best city to live in by 2040. In his ‘Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan’, Sheikh Mohammed, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, rolls out his two-decade vision that will see Dubai become one of the most coveted places to live on earth.
According to the master plan, Dubai’s public beaches will grow by 400%, which will help double the city’s “economic and recreational activities.” Hotels and tourist attractions will be given an increase of land area by 134%, while commercial pursuits will be given an extra 168 square kilometers. The plan also includes ensuring that “60% of Dubai’s area will be nature reserves.”

The Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan focuses predominantly on developing and investing in historical neighborhoods like Deira, Bur Dubai, and the Downtown/Business Bay area, as well as tourist hotspots such as the Dubai Marina and JBR. Following its opening in October, the Expo 2020 Center will also be developed further to provide more affordable housing, and Dubai Silicon Oasis will be built as Dubai’s technology and science hub, much like Silicon Valley.
An emphasis on walking, cycling, and mass transit are expected in an attempt to build a city with more flexible transportation options, as well as encouraging healthy and inclusive communities, while public parks, green spaces, and leisure areas are also expected to double in size.
The vision for what Dubai is building has never been more exciting.
